Do you know, Emma, I never thought of that! It was amusing to see that the large hotel display tank contained only conventional non-Borneo freshwater fish. I did see plenty of "fresh" water though. It was a large river near the town of Beaufort (rings a bell with loach names?), running throug...

More on Borneo

Just returned from holiday in Borneo (Kota Kinabalu). To my shame I did not get to paddle around in the streams (too busy diving) , but I did locate some fascinating books, which you can find and order at http://www.nhpborneo.com/main.htm The Borneo suckers, by Tan Hoek Hui is a magnificant b...

Levamisole and plants?

I am shortly going to have to treat my entire tank with levamisole, as per the recent thread. But...it's heavily planted with large established Cryptocorynes and there's no chance of catching all of the loach and shifting them to a Q tank. Does anyone know if the plants will suffer from the treatmen...

Vaillantella alert for Brits

For those of you with well-lined pockets, Wildwoods in Crews Hill, Enfield, have quite number of these beasts in stock. Fortunately for my bank balance, I think that most of my fish would regard them as "food" :P

The electricity supplier strikes!

Tragedy!  A couple of mornings ago I woke to find the power off, and that half of my clown loach had died, along with full-grown boesemanii and red rainbows, plus a few odds and ends. After checking clocks around the house it seems that the power went off just after midnight (in a fierce ...

I have 2 of the "new" Borneo slim types, 3 small and 2 large of the stockier Sumatran types. They have little in common apart from general coloration. Borneo types are loners, and tend to rest perched on a rock; Sumatran babies are extremely active and contually dance up and down at the front of the...

Andyroo is absolutely correct. The newcomers are being frozen out by the existing mob of loaches, and their behaviour is very differerent. I'd guess that they are verging on becoming a different species - like happens with Malawi cichlids. Pity we can't breed them to find our their preferences.

Different races of Clown loach?

I'm sure that this has cropped up before in the Archives, but I can't find it. I recently added a couple more clowns to my swarm of youngsters, and it's immediately apparent that they look rather different from the originals. The most obvious difference is that the black bands are much narrower, fin...

No trouble with my Ghost knife. He only eats things that can be gulped in one hit, and shows no interest in larger fish (except at feeding time). Actually a very shy and retiring fish that takes a lot of coaxing to integrate with the clowns. But I would'nt trust one with small fish. I think he's a p...

Graeme - Silversides are members of the Atherinidae family, like UK whitebait. I never thought of feding these to my loaches, because every time I try, the black ghost knifefish grabs them.
