Are these loaches?

Post by Caveman » Mon Nov 17, 2008 9:59 pm

Hi all,

this is my first topic here.
I got these from a lfs couple days ago, however, the shop couldn't provide the profile of this lovely species and I thought that they are a kind of loaches. Can anyone help to ID them? Thanks a lot!

 Wow. Could they be juvenile Schistura pridii or similar?

These fish must be tiny, Leo. How large would you say they are?

Could you keep us updated on their growth progress with pictures?

I wonder if anyone has manage to breed theirs in captivity and these are the fry? It would be surprising if they were exporting these juveniles, as even the adults are tiny compared to most species. These must be miniscule.

After reading their profile, I'm so regret that I bought an endemic and fragile species. They're about 2.5cm and I have no idea whether they're wild caught or captive bred. Anyway, I'll try my best to keep them.

Thanks for the assistance.

Wow :!: What Beautiful little fish. Such a shame there isn't more info on them sometimes. I left some absoloutely beautiful fish at the pet store about a week ago because there was just no info on them, not even preferred water conditions or foods, or even adult size. They actually looked a similar shape to the ones you showed, but these were peacock blue with red and other brilliant colours. Too bad I had to leave them behind :( Good luck on finding out more, and hope you enjoy them. There is so much we aquarists still have to learn, and perhaps it is also up to us to share what we do :!:

Lovely 8)

I know some think this is S.pridii, but at 2.5cm would you not expect a more 'adult' appearance, especially in the markings :?: And the mouth is more 'under' than in the photos I have of S.pridii. Obviously young fish change, but Im not to sure on this one :?

Theres something about the head that doesn't look quite right, I think I had one when I first got them at 1 inch and the banding was entire around the body, but there were about 8 bands in total. Pic below is of late last yr when the banding was only visable halve way down.

I would certainlly be interested in up dates and more little pic's of these chaps :D Perhaps you could speak to the store you got them from and see if they were wild caught and if so, where the location was ?

Beautiful Photos btw

Ashleigh

Edit- Found my old post on this one above, it did confirm that this one was approx 0.5 inch smaller than the rest so that would make it 1 inch or just under since the S.pridii ate 1.5-1.7 inch now.

Heres the pic's from back then

i was looking at the size and shape of the eye since this thread has been up, in proportion to the body they're to big.
Emma remember your sewelia fry looked nothing like the parents in shape or colouration.
although these are bigger they do remind me of yours.

I've been thinking about this all evening whilst sorting out tonight's shipments, and came to the conclusion that the body shape and markings would be too different for them to be Schistura pridii if they are at 2.5cm. I'm wondering if in fact this is a different species, maybe from China or Hong Kong? It would be great if Caveman could find out where the supplier is based. Very attractive youngsters, whatever they are.

Does anyone have a formal description of S. pridii? Fishbase quotes them as having 10 soft dorsal fin rays, but I'm not sure that's correct. I've been looking through all my pics, and I am sure in most cases mine have 7 or 8. I was going to try and compare with the ray count on Caveman's fish, but now I'm not sure if 10 is correct. Ashleigh, Graeme, Mick et al, can you do a count on your fish?

I see 7 to 8 on Ashleigh's fish.

Il have a count this afternoon. Emma, does it say a description in that S.pridii paper :?:

Edit-that paper says 7 for the dorsal if Im not mistaken :? Had a look at other up to date photos and Im getting a count of 8 (I think).
