Looking for Oblongas and Contaminants?
I was at PetSmart today and found a good collection of P. oblonga and "eel Kuhlies" for $1.59 each. I am not sure what the contaminants are: either P doriae or P. anguillaris. I was trying to get them home and in the tank, so I didn't want to spend the time on the actual ID. Mine have a color stripe in the tail and have a greenish shiny hue. I showed the employees they have two species. I picked up two Oblonga and 3 "eels" and there was a forth "eel" but it was being uncooperative about being caught. I didn't want to stress out the entire tank any more than it was.

Congrats on you new Pangio
They are soooo interesting....
The store can put a plastic moss-ball in the pangio tank. They hide in there and you just need to get the ball in the net and can pick which ones you need, save some stress, but you need to sneak up on the ball though...
We will see pic's soon? At night with the flashlight new ones are easier to shoot. Some freeze in the light (low power led).

It must be common for Petsmart to get those two species together, even though we live almost a continent apart. I was there the other day and they had one lonely anguillaris in with their oblongas. I thought about bringing them home, but unfortunately, they didn't look so good, so I decided to wait for a healthier batch. I went back a couple days later, and some of the oblongas were laying there dead.
I didn't see the anguillaris, so I silently hope someone bought him.
If you are trying to get an ID on your new kuhli, it may be helpful for you to know that anguillaris has no nasal barbel. I'm not sure about the other spcies you mentioned, because it's not in the Loach book.
What a great idea with the moss ball!! That's very clever, and now that you mentioned it, I think I'll get one for my kuhlies to hide in at home. It is such a good idea I'm going to suggest it to some of the stores, at least, the ones who carry moss balls!! It would make catching them a whole lot easier!
Good luck with your new Loaches!!

I just changed their water, and everyone is doing the loachy dance along the glass. Unfortunately, I don't know which are my new and old fish. I assume the smaller ones are the news ones. I will see if I can get some pictures in the near future. I think I have five species of Pangios. Very funny was the large horsehead peaking his head out from the sand. He had a piece of cuttlebone on his head like a big hat, and then slipped back under the sand.
I bet that was cute to see. I hope you post pics soon. I'd like to see what others ID yours as. I think I have several different species also.starsplitter7 wrote: Very funny was the large horsehead peaking his head out from the sand.
