Mesonoemacheilus guentheri in 15gallon?

Post by Flaxss » Sat Dec 04, 2010 12:44 pm

Hello

I now have 4 Mesonoemacheilus guentheri in a 66 gallon tank, but i would like to move them to another tank.

What will be best for them ?

15 gallon tank, temperature 59-68f in winter and 77-86f in summer.
or
99 gallon tank, temperature 78-82f in winter and 82-86f in summer.

If they can be in the 15 gallon tank I think I would have them there alone, just them 4, in this tank I can provide for them an adjusted environment.

But in the bigger tank the water is warm and I can not change so much for them. In this bigger tank I have clown loach, gouramis, rasbora, botia, red-tailed black shark.

How should I do ? can they be in small thank like 15G or would they feel happy in warm water ? so I can move them to my 99gallon instead.

thanks for help

Thank you, I have read it before but i can't find anything about tank size for them.

I know that they don't want to have warm water, but I was thinking I ask and see if there is someone here that have them successfully in warmer water.

Tank size is often a personal choice and you'll get differing opinions. IMO they should have at the very least a 30" tank.

Thank you, the 15 Gallon tank I think its about 23,6''.

But if i consider my 99 gallon, 59'' i would have no problem with the tank size, but how is it about the temperature ?

They need highly oxygenated water, and when it is as warm as you indicate your tanks are the oxygen drops. I think the smaller tank with the correct temperature might work better. Are they compatiable? Would they fight in a smaller tank?

In the 99g i have
Fluval 4 Plus;
- Suitable for tanks up to 215 litres/ 57 U.S. Gal
- 1000 l/h

Fluval U4;

- For aquariums from 130 L to 240 L(34 to 65 U.S. Gal.)
- 1000 l/h

Eheim Classic 2217;

- 159 gallons with a maximum pump performance of 264 gph
- Canister Volume - 6.6 L
- Output 1000 L/h
Its not designed as a river tank, but i think its a good flow. Fluval 4 create a current in the middle (as its not hanged up) and Fluval U4 flows on the water surface. Eheim doesn't give that much of current.

my clown loaches seems thrive, but maybe Mesonoemacheilus guentheri is require more oxygen ?

They don't seems to be aggressive against each other. But then its a bigger tank.

What's the cause of the high temps in Summer? Would it be possible to control? Even th 15 reaches 86 and that's high IMO. Id' go for the bigger tank and try to keep the temp under 82.

They are in different rooms, the room where i have my 99G gets allots of sunshine which make the temperature rise (I think that's the cause). I have problems with that, but the fish i have there seems to do quit well. I don't use heater but its still gest warm and its stays warm(er) pretty much all summer and in winter i use heater so its stays warm for my clown loach, gouramis, rasbora, botia, red-tailed black shark.

Where i have my 15g the room is cooler, but a few times in summer it gets up to 86F, mostly not so high. In this room i have them now but in a bigger tank (66G, river designed tank). Here they have seem to thrive. In winter the water gets chilly but not cold (i don't use heater in this tank).

I can try to get the temperature lower in my bigger tank, if so do you have any suggestion to cool it down ?

EDIT - The temperature in summer is daytime high.

Have a look at all of your heat sources,

Internal filters/powerheads

Lighting? Can be put on a timer & limited during the hottest part of the day. If your fixtures are close to the top or right on top of glass tops raise them up an inch or so

Sunlight, block it out with curtains or? during the heat of the day.

Small fans blowing over the water surface will cool it a little but also cause more evaporation.

And i summer i hope i can get the temperature down.
