Best Internal Parasite Meds in the US
Can anyone suggest the best internal parasite meds in the US?
If it's worms you have in mind, you can't get much better than levamisole. A two-day bath in a 2ppm soln will kill worms in a fish's intestinal tract. Camallanus doesn't stand a chance. Ione or two follow-ups a week apart will ensure that you've killed them all. The best form for aquarium use is sold under the name Prohibit, and since it is meant to be a drench, it is water-soluble. Levamisole is very fish safe (I've heard of hobbyists using a 10 ppm dose with no ill effects), but there is a paper out there linking its use to sterility in zebra danios. IME, I've not seen any loss in fertility - it is likely the researchers used a higher dose than the recommended 2ppm. Note that above 2ppm, it will cause harm to some plant species, and that levamisole, while safe for sheep, cows, and fish, is toxic to birds.
