Fatty or Gravid

Post by adampetherick » Mon Oct 16, 2006 6:26 am

I've got a yoyo with a bit of a belly on it, I got it about a month ago as it was all on it's own in the shop, got it some friends a few weeks later which look normal sized, not sure if it's because the yoyo has had a few weeks more feeding or if it is gravid?

Female yoyos seem to get gravid fairly easily in aquaria, though there are no reports of actual spawnings that I am aware of. Does she look like this?

Here are the author's comments regarding the pic:
Commercial breeding of yo-yos has been accomplished in Thailand for a few years already. It's a strip-spawning method where gravid females and males are induced to last stages of gamete maturation through injections of gonadotropins. They are then respectively manually stripped of eggs and milt (sperm) which are mixed and left to develop and hatch in hatching tanks.

This fish is hormone enhanced. I had a gravid one that was quite small, though reticulated and her belly was not as big, but when I lost her due to a pimafix treatment I did a very amatureish 'autopsy' and did see eggs. You can look at my photo album if you're interested in the gruesome details.

Here she is live and kicking. From what I could tell she was only about 18 months old...
