Headache??? mmmmmmmm.
Today the spottie looks to have reddish edges around his pectoral fins. Maybe it's because I'm seeing red by now...

IF Martin's fish with the larger spots is definitely stellatus, then mine must be also. Same patterning, same tail, same type nose. etc.

the other guy (little spottie) I don't know. He's sporting red rims around his pecs today--maybe it's the new fashion. Course the pics I tried to take are useless since it doesn't show at all. (besides, they are blurry...grrrr!)

Yes Jim, thanks 8)
Can't read the captions but the series of three on the right look familiar, except for the tail. Too much black...

Something I noticed today is that the spottie has a bright white dot on the dorsal ridge immediately in front of the dorsal fin (may or may not matter) and it has a small black spot in the dorsal fin itself at the base of the first ray of the fin.

If you can point me to somewhere with a discussion of the anatomy of these fish I'd appreciate it. for instance, they have pectoral fins, but what are the second set behind the dorsal called? What do you call the scaley patch right at the front of the second set? etc. etc...these fish are a whole new world.

Here are a few half decent photos (sorta ;-))

Does the blackened area to the upper left look like a wound to you? Looks wrong somehow to me.

Do you see red in this pic on the sand? I didn't edit this at all...

And a very out of focus pic that shows the spot a bit

I agree...that dark mark looks strange.....untill you look at these.

Anatomy class, big screen stylee......

Gastromyzon ocellatus

Gastromyzon stellatus

Gastromyzon ctenocephalus

Gastromyzon zebrinus

As you can see, there's always a dark area there, sometimes more visible than others. The middle bit is the heart, so maybe that's a big artery or part of the heart, whatever. It's pretty consitant though, so I think nothing to worry about in your Gastromyzon thingummybob.

I think you misunderstood what I meant by 'dark spot'. Looking at the mouth, there are 4 barbels, right? The barbel farthest to the fishes right side (looking from the top of the fish) seems to have a dark indented area directly behind the barbel along the head line. Looks like some kind of damage to me. ?

"Oh Lord.....please don't let me be misunderstood"

Well you were

NOW I see what you mean. Thing is, I only see it in one pic.....Trick of the light?

Those MONSTER pics are the full-size files from my camera on max resolution (3.2 Mp)

What I normally post here are 33% versions, downsized in the editing program.
