Where did my Tiger go?

Post by shekinah » Thu Oct 26, 2006 9:36 pm

I just went to check on my Tiger Botia and he's gone! He was the only fish in the tank, it was a 10 gal ( because he was small right now). I know that they are great excape artest but do they jump out of tanks? I had full cover on this tank so the only hioles would be where the heater and filter were. I put an extra pice of plastic on the where the filter is. Could he have been such a good shot to be able to jump and hit a very small hold and got out? This breaks my heart, I really enjoyed him. The other one I have in the 30 gal. I just don't know do any of you guys know if he could or would do that?
Jackie :(

Quite a few other loach varieties can jump out of tanks, I assume you've taken all the decor out and checked thoroughly? If not be carefull when you do as they are good at hiding in small spaces and you might end up taking it out along with the decor.

Can you not see it on the floor? a 10g should not be too hard to move to look around

Yes I went through everything that was in tank. Didn't have much in there, had his cave and 7 or 8 plants. I even took the HOB filter apart just in case. I looked under tank and all over floor for him, if he did hit the floor his chances of surviving would be slim to non, I have cats. That is why I keep the tank covered. The only place he could have jumped out would be that small opening by the heater. I really didn't think he would jump. His partner that is in the other tank never comes out of it's cave until lights are out. But this guy I would lightly tap on glass and he was there and followed my fingure around. It must have been just a fluke that he got out. I want to thank you for responding so quickly.
Thank You
Jackie

Would be a good idea to check the water quality, fish are most likely to jump tank when there is a problem with the water

If you use an aquaclear- like filter, it isn't unheard of for a fish to swim and jump up into the filter, then out onto the top of the tank, then onto the floor.

When I first got my BN plecos a year ago the male would sleep inside my aquaclear... it freaked me out. Eventually he stopped but for the first week or so as soon as the lights were off SPLASH! and I'd look and he'd be inside my aquaclear... He never jumped out of the filter to the floor or anything though... he'd just swim out into the overflow and flop back into the tank...

Same here. Mine never got hurt by this, but the a Vannie did the same and emerged covered with white and red spots..., so I had to change the filter to a safer model.

It is certainly possible for a fish to jump out through a very small hole in the cover, I had a rasbora suicide this way.

I had an Angel do this at a friend's house. The day before I was going to pick it up it jumped out and was eaten by his cats.... :(

One of my YoYo loaches would swim up into my HOB filter on the back of my tank. It was really weird, scared me the frst time I saw it, but then realized he could easily come and go as he wanted. I haven't seen him do this much lately though.
