[quote="mikev"]You can (and should) eliminate the salt totally. Even if you are not getting loaches. GF is also a freshwater fish, after all

Well, that really depends on whom do you ask... ;) This seems true for many questions in this hobby. :)

You can browse the other pangio species to see the variety. Cool little fish. 8)

they are a funny and active bottom fish when kept in groups, but sand substrate is best for them. Your goldfish might benefit from it too, if they root about in the bottom for food. I've seen my daughter's goldies actually picking up the rocks and spitting them out, and have heard of others having problems with their goldfish actually swallowing or getting small gravel stuck inside their mouths.

Anyways, khulis would make nice bottom feeders, they love to hang about in plants and are very peaceful. There are also some very pretty ones about (if you can find them!).
...........
One other question. What is the pH of your tank?
Thanks, I'll look at khulis as well. pH in the tank is around 7.1. Tap water comes out around 6.8.

I was browsing the Pangio K. page, and saw that the recommended water temp is 78-82... a bit too hot for our goldies. pH 6.2-6.8.

On this other Kuhli page here:
http://www.loaches.com/species_pages/kloach.html
The water temp is 70-75F, also the pH range seems a lot more forgiving.
Are they talking about the same fish? :?

Both ranges are incorrect. 78F-82F is simply too narrow a strip, a widespread species cannot be locked into a 4F interval, this does not happen in nature. The interval for Pangio Kuhli given by fishbase (24 – 30°C) is more plausible. OTOH, 70F-75F is too cold for most of the species.

The older version of the page you linked does recommend 75F in a different contents:
If you're not sure which species you have, I suggest keeping the water at about 75 degrees Fahrenheit until you can identify the proper temperature.
which makes sense.

I kept a couple kuhlis with hillstreams for a while at 75-76, they were just fine; most kuhlis here are kept at 76F-78F. I'd, however, be afraid to keep them at 70F, this may be too low.
