what size powerhead?

Post by Setsuna » Wed Dec 20, 2006 7:11 am

G'day all. Boss didnt call the mafia on me, which i really appreciate because it means I can work on setting up my tank (or at least designing and planning till my wrist heals up).

The tank I'm using will hold 108L (approx 28gal). I've been offered 2 new powerheads that will pump 1400L/hr for really really cheap (gotta love deleted lines ^_^)

If my maths is correct this would mean that the water would cycle about 28 times an hour. Would this current be ridiculously fast for the hillstreams or would they love me more for it?

Thanks guys ^_^

If you mean each one pumps 1400 L/hr, that means it shifts 108 L just over 12 times. 2 x 12 = 24 times.

Add decor which removes water volume and you start to approach your figure in turnover.

It's certainly up there in pumping power. My first River-tank turned over about 16 times/hr taking into consideration powerheads and filtration, so 24 + times is certainly moving water.

A 28 gallon tank is what, a 30" or a 24"? With that much oomph in a tank that size you'll get a lot of flow reversals because of "bounce back" of water jet from the opposite end tank wall. It's going to be fairly churning over in there.

It's difficult to call because decor design will affect the internal flow patterns. On paper, it seems very high, but seeing the natural rivers in photos and the odd video the fish can certainly handle it.

Pumping that much water means a lot of suck at the intake sponges. They do need to be reasonable big to dissipate the suction over a larger area to avoid pulling fish hard against them.

If you've got two powerhead mounting points on your River-Tank manifold I would buy both pumps (because they're a deal) and block one powerhead mount. Run it with one powerhead and see what the flow looks like in the tank. If it looks OK, then double up and check it out.

Even if you don't end up using both on this tank, the cheapo powerhead will have uses elsewhere no?

I have an Aquaclear 802 (1514 L/hr) in my 30 gal Sewellia tank, plus an Aquaclear 201 (476 L/hr). They run the River-Tank manifold along with additional filtration by a couple of HOB filters.

I haven't done the math, but it's probably around 20 times/hr turnover spread between all the pumps. If you stick all your turnover into the one basket of the powerheads, there will be greater tumbling of water rather than uni-directional current, but the fish will still love it

The tank size is 3'9" long x 1' wide x 1' deep. I think its a 108L, I'm not sure. Plus my conversion from L to gal might be completely wrong.

I think I'll get the two, and even if I use only one, I've got a spare incase it breaks or something.

Thanks Martin, your a legend ^_^

I'm a leg-end in my own lunchtime

3 feet 9 inches? Go for 2 then, no problem.

Love you? They're going to adore you for it 8)

Awesome. Now all I need is my wrist to heal up so I can start working on it ^_^

With the two powerheads, would I need bigger pipes, or would 3/4" be fine?
