More on Borneo
Just returned from holiday in Borneo (Kota Kinabalu). To my shame I did not get to paddle around in the streams (too busy diving)
, but I did locate some fascinating books, which you can find and order at http://www.nhpborneo.com/main.htm The Borneo suckers, by Tan Hoek Hui is a magnificant book just on hillstreams, and Freshwater Fishes of North Borneo covers loads of another interesting stuff. I expect some of you specialists already know about these books, but if not, they are well worth the fairly high price and postage.

Do you know, Emma, I never thought of that!
It was amusing to see that the large hotel display tank contained only conventional non-Borneo freshwater fish. I did see plenty of "fresh" water though. It was a large river near the town of Beaufort (rings a bell with loach names?), running through mangroves. The water was dark brown and full of suspended solids, but also full of rising fish (and snakes and crocodiles). Show you a picture when I visit your shop.
The boatman claimed to recognise my loach sketch and said that there were "large" fish like this in the river. I've a nasty feeling that I might have eaten one from the barbeque after the trip - sorry, mea culpa.

When in Rome...
How big was it? Tasty?
And, yup. You'll just have to go back, I guess.
