Shrimp Cubes
I am sure this has been done before. However, my smaller tetras like the salad shrimp pureed and even the smaller loaches appreciate it. So I had an idea to puree a dozen salad shrimp then stuff them into the old frozen bloodworm container to make the cubes. then when i need em plop em in like i do the cubes. it will save me the trouble of cutting them up for the smaller fish everytime i do it. and i have two smaller tetras that have their equilibrium sack(not sure what it is called) popped. so they have trouble swimming. the salad shrimp are perfect bc it sinks quickly enough that the handicapped fish have more opportunity for the food to land near them than flake food.

That's a great idea!
Just make sure that the old containers are clean and you cover them with something. You can also use a ziploc freezer baggie and lay the goop out in a thin sheet. That way you have a closed container and can just break off the size of the food you want.
And mr.g is right, raw would be good, too, though I know many use the cooked shrimp as well.

I have always cooked my shrimp first, but now I know better. That's what I love about this forum--I'm always learning something new.
I think it's a great idea to chop it in bulk and freeze. I'll have to do it Shari's way since I don't have those little containers.
One more thing: Is it OK that my shrimp is frozen and not fresh?
Thanks

you can also get ice cube trays at wall mart. they should have some kind of fancy party type shapes as well. well this is salad shrimp from the market. i believe it is already pasteurized. i will try fresh shrimp next. i tried the cubes today. it worked great except that i had to break up the shrimp after it thawed. but it broke up easily. i only micowaved the shrimp long enough for them to defrost. then used a food processor and scooped it into the cubes with a fork.
i have been to europe and seen walmarts but if there isn't one near you go to a store that has kitchen supplies. they should have some type of ice cube trays. generally they have range of smaller cubes and larger cubes. some of them have animal shapes for example.
someone should probably make a mold. Actually if someone would draw a loach picture. I could send it to my mom, get her to carve it out of clay and make loach ice cube trays. this way you would have shrimp cubes in the shape of a loach!

You might want to be careful about re-freezing uncooked previously frozen food. I've heard it allows for the growth of bacteria...

my shrimp was frozen. i thawed it with the microwave for about 15 seconds. i believe in the loach almanac it says something like shrimp for humans has higher standards for bacteria and such. i would believe it would be fine. normally i get the brine shrimp with spirulina mixed in. they love it. i also get frozen blood worms. but everything i have ever given my loaches has been frozen cubes of shrimp, mesquito larvae, bloodworms, tubiflex worms. but the loach don't seem to eat the tubiflex.
shari, i bought salad shrimp. i believe they were already pre cooked.
package says, " salad shrimp: cooked and peeled"
these are smaller 1/2" size shrimp.
