Newbie from NE PA rambling about loaches, etc

Post by MoonPye » Sun Sep 09, 2007 8:39 am

Just wanted to introduce myself. I stumbled upon your site after doing a search for "sand as substrate" because I was researching setting up a sand tank for my loaches.. I had no idea there was a whole forum devoted to loaches, I LOVE IT!!!

Years ago when my husband and I first got together (we've been together for 10.5 years) I accidentally found a dojo at a pet store while looking for something else, and immediately fell in love and brought him home! I had no idea what loaches were at the time and the pet store guy only told me he could live in a community tank with normal ph parameters, etc.

This guy ended up growing to about 8 or 9 inches, lived with us for several years (don't remember how many exactly), lived very peacefully with my community in either my 30 or 55 gal (I moved the fish to the bigger tank at some point). He was quite a hoot and I was totally enamored with him the entire time. Sure, I had prettier fish, but none with his personality!

So following the normal course of events we got married, moved to another state, bought a house, and started having children, and the fish tanks were either sold or put in storage. :-( My two 55's are still in storage and it's killling me!

Recently I decided my 5 yr old and 2 yr old would appreciate looking at a fish tank (we already have a dog and a cat) so I set up a little 10 gal that my sister gave to us.. I should have known better.. I got bit by the bug again!!! I've been driving my husband CRAZY since!!! I have acquired 3 x 20 gals and one 32 hex (that we are restoring) in the past month alone! LOL I've been bugging him daily to get my 55's out of storage, but I may have to wait a bit on that.

I also drove him crazy searching for that same "weather loach" I had all those years ago.. I didn't know it was called a dojo.. after a couple of weeks I found some at a Petco and bought two. I was SO EXCITED!!! I brought them home, put them in the 20 with some community fish, and one of them did not survive an adventure into a filter (my cat stepped on the power strip, turning off the corner filter, he evidently crawled into the hole while there were no air bubbles coming out, and I didn't find him until 3 days later) :-( ~still heartbroken over that~

The survivor has been with us now for about 3 weeks and is growing quickly. I will be moving him into the 32 gal once we get it done.

I just recently got 3 kuhli's for the 10 (but they are only waiting for me to set up the sand tank in another 20 gal) but unfortunately one did not survive an ich outbreak. :-( I will be looking for a couple more kuhlis next trip to the fish store.

Is it possible to house dojo's and kuhli's together, or will the little guys get eaten?

Sorry my intro was so long and rambling, I'm just so excited to find others that love loaches as I do!!! The more I learn about them, the more I love! Thanks to the internet so much information is available to me now.

One more question: I'm seriously thinking about doing an all loach tank in one of the 20's.. what would be nice to have in there, do you guys suggest? My only problem is I live in northeast PA in the middle of nowhere and is sometimes hard to find things.. I hate the idea of mail order, but is that a safe option for me? I've never gotten fish thru mail order before, it makes me so nervous for the fish!!

Ok I'm really going to end this post now. I promise all my posts won't be this long!!! :-)

Welcome MoonPye :)

I'm in central PA, and I also am a mom who loves keeping fish. My kids like them, too.
It was nice reading your post. You've come to a great place to learn all about these delightful fish.
I'm still learning about the kuhli loaches and clown loaches that I keep, and the members here are so helpful.

It will be nice having you on the forum.

:)

Hi and welcome,

Dojos would not eat kuhlis but they desire different water perams (Dojos requiring lower water temperatures.).

Have a read of this about dojos,

And have alook through some of the articles here for some ideas for the 20,

Hi Monica!

My story would be very similar to yours, as it was a weather loach that first introduced me to loaches. Very interesting fellas. I am still contemplating setting up a large tank for goldies and dojos.

That incident with the cat... fascinating (well not for you dojo I mean). Power outages typically claim lots of fish, I've experienced that myself with a tropical tank hitting below 60* in a winter outage. But thats the first I've heard a cat swithcing a strip off... lol!

Hi Monica,

Welcome :D It is a fun forum with a lot of very knowledgeable and helpful folks- you'll never go wrong here.

Congrats on the decision to get back into the hobby. I too live out in the middle of BFE, but don't let that deter you from seeking and finding the fish you want...if you have a local fish store that's worth anything, they'll usually work with you and will usually even order a particular loach (or any other fish) that you're looking for. Also, some folks here have tried Frank's for mail order www.franksaquarium.com and swear by it. May be trying that one soon myself.

Enjoy!

Nice story...Get those 55s out of storage!.

I'm not particularly a loach fan myself. I wanted to pick a fish to live in my small heavily planted apartment tank and after much thinking remembered a kuhli loach we used to have in a family tank that was incredibly hardy and cute. I was excited to keep kuhlis again. Got out the ceramic house the old loach used to live in.

Of course this time around I was going to do things right and keep my kuhli loaches in a group. Unfortunately things have not gone so well so I have lost half of my original group. Kuhli loaches have turned out to be higher care then I recalled and more sensitive.
I had hoped to move towards breeding them, but that isn't on my mind anymore if I can barely keep them alive.

Hi Monica, and welcome to Loaches Online. :D

It was great to read your story. If you love Weather Loaches, you might enjoy this thread  : http://forums.loaches.com/viewtopic.php?t=6396

Stocking ideas on your tanks will depend upon the 'footprint' of the aquarium, that is the length and the width. Most loaches appreciate a good amount of floor space and I think some of the tanks you mention may be a little too small for most loach species. However, if you have bigger tanks available (3ft long+), then there are lots of options.

Welcome Monica. Those loaches will get you addicted - I used to be a cichlid guy before I discovered these wonderful fish. Read up on the species in the excellent index on this site before buying - you can save yourself a lot of grief. It's amazing (and sad) how little knowledge many LFS personnel have, or perhaps it's a lack of interest in giving their customers appropriate information. This forum is an absolute gold mine (and a place to get some sympathy when an accident happens - my spouse thinks I am nuts and I only have one tank!!)
