Thanks for the tips, i'll definitely be checking the ammonia cycle closely again for the next while. I think i'll be ok with it so planted but regardless i'll be keeping a sharp eye on things.

I am so sorry about the fish you lost. :(.

One thing you can do to help prevent overheating in the event of heater failure is to get two heaters, neither of which are large enough to sufficiently heat the tank. That way if one malfunctioned, the other would shut off, and you'd only have half the amount of wattage stuck on.
