Is it white calcium and/or salt stains on driftwood? If it is, maybe only the water is soaking into the driftwood, and all the minerals in the water are left behind, which will leave a residue or stain on the wood.

Maybe try soaking or boiling the driftwood in pure water, like RO or distillied water until the driftwood is water logged.

Some slime and smell is normal. Driftwood decomposition is basically nitrogen and gives off a strong rotten earthy smell.

Have any pictures of the slime?
