A. zolternans spawned

Post by Mad Duff » Sun Oct 28, 2007 7:22 am

While altering the timers this morning on the river tank I noticed that a couple of the A. zolternans were very active in and around the roots and moss, I finished what I was doing and continued onto other tanks not thinking anything of it.

I went back to the river tank about 20 minutes later and saw a male emerging from the moss embracing a female and then they shot into another clump of roots and emerged in the same way, on closer inspection there are hundreds of eggs in different pieces of moss and roots :D

I got a couple of pictures but they are not that good, I have circled the eggs (white dots within moss)

Congratulations Mark! 8)

Are you going to let the eggs be left in the aquarium or remove them?

You could always check the external filter later for the fry.

I am leaving the eggs in there, the moss the have laid in on the bogwood is well attached and so are all the java ferns plus I don't have a spare tank at the moment.

Hopefully some will turn up in the filter but I am hoping with all the rock work, bogwood and hidey holes some will manage to survive in the tank.

Clowns-6 is a group and more is never too many, providing the aquarium is large enough.

congratulations mark,
the chances of you getting any fry are pretty slim mate, mine spawn all the time in their tank and i have never seen any fry.
if i was you i'd syphon the moss.

Yes I was wondering that too. Also MD, did you do anything specific that might have triggered them into spawning? Large cool water change etc?

The eggs didn't seem to get eaten as they were visible for a couple of days and then gradually started disappearing so hopefully that was a sign that they were hatching rather than getting eaten :?

I did do a water change two days before hand and I had switched of the cooling fan, on the days that they spawned the temperature had risen from 76 to 78.

I have seen some very small things moving under cobbles but it could be debris or anything so nothing certain yet, a couple of the females have already started to plump up again so hopefully they are going to start spawning again.
