Glad I wasn't shopping with you, because I'd be setting up a few more tanks right now because I couldn't resist them either.mickthefish wrote:ta luv,

Not sure about rupecula for the first one. It does almost key out to that species if it is from the mainland, however it doesnt look like its got enough bars to me. Do you know where it was caught?
The other one does look at first glance like a selangoricus although the top lobe of the caudal on that species tends to be quite long; I think it is closer to N. spiniferus. However, both these species have acuminate scales above and below the lateral line and I cant seem to see any on the photo. I wondered about N. kapausensis but this doesnt have tubular nares. It could also be N. saravacensis as this doesnt have acuminate scales and the number of bars differ in some specimens of this species - it can have 13-17 bars (8-12 in selangoricus, 10-13 in spiniferus).
Can you get a close up of the back end of the fish? I cant seem to see any acuminate scales. If no acuminate scales it is possibly saravacensis.

ID on fish
steve lad, only the first pic is what i think could be rupecula the next two pics are the fish it come in with.
on to the other fish that come in with kottelatlimia, so i'm thinking it came from either borneo or sarawak.
only trouble is bud is that Patrick is the exporter, and as we know he only collects the fish who go out in the field to collect them.
so the fish could have come from there or not?.
i'll try to get a closer shot from the dorsal to the peduncle bud.

Mick, the first one looks very much like the some of the ones in the thread below (minus the red colour). The body shape, head shape, position of fins, lateral line, bands (you can see faint bands in the body), caudal shape, dark bar in caudal peduncle, all match.

The fish in the 2nd and 3rd photos looks a similar shape etc to the one in the 1st. Have you got a side shot of them and did they come in together?

ayyup Mick
The first fish is the same species as the 2nd and 3rd, all their characteristics match exactly. Its just that the top one doesnt have as much body and is showing a darker base colour (probably a male). Difficult to tell for certain but IF they are from India, they are probably rupecula or a similar undescribed species. I thought about multifasciatus but that has less branched dorsal rays and has a distinct nasal barbel. The ones on your photos seem to be tubes rather than barbels but its hard to tell cos when I magnify it blurs and I cant tell for sure.
I still cant see any acuminate scales on the other one so IF it is from Borneo its probably saravacensis.
