My kubotai's favorite cave

Post by loachmom » Thu Nov 29, 2007 12:30 pm

Hi,

We've been amused for weeks with one of my kubotai. I was cleaning my tanks and stacked two coconut shells halves on top of each other to make room for vacuuming. Somehow, I didn't put the shells back where I found them, and we soon noticed that one of the kubotai had taken up residence in the top half. He guards it fiercely. Here is a picture of him making sure that no one is getting too close.

Now, my kids want me to add a third story to see what happens. :)

That reminds me of those terracotta stacks that Mad Duff makes for his loaches. Great shot, loachmom! 8)

Thanks Emma and Rocco! :D

This is the only kub that hides regularly. The four others are usually out exploring and searching for goodies. I hope they stay outgoing. My clowns were outgoing when I first got them, but then they starting staying out of sight and only coming out for food. I think that is normal clown behavior from what I've read.
Hopefully, the kubs will stay as they are. I like seeing my fish out and about.

I think as loaches mature (in general) they become less out front.

I'd love to see your picture, mamaschild. :)

And thanks, newshound, for that info. It's not exactly what I wanted to hear, but I'm glad to know more about these little fish. I'll just have to make sure to give frequent small feedings, so I can see them more often when they get older.

Sorry for being off topic: How did you cit the holes, and are the top secured? Glued together? Just curious. Thanks. Tanja.

I used the "Plates" instead of the terra cotta pots, cut the holes with a dremel and glued two together with silicone :) Very easy, took about 20 minutes to make each one, and probably cost under $2 each ;)

Great pictures. When my kubs were in quarantine, one of them used to spend a fair bit of time wedged behind a little internal filter. It was a tiny space, and not at all hidden, but he he used to keep the other two well away from it.
Fast and bulbous!
