Brackish water for Pangio's?

Post by jimphelps99 » Mon Dec 31, 2007 10:32 am

New to the forum, but I've always had loaches in my tanks. I admit to being a Pangio lover - not much for the rigid-body forms. The typical kuhli and black kuhli loaches. I'd also picked up a couple of "silver kuhli loaches" (probably Pangio anguillaris, according to your photo index) that lived for over 15 years.

I'm setting up a new 75 gallon tank, and of course intend to have loaches in it. I'd considered making it a brackish-water setup, but am not sure about Pangio's tolerance for that. I know my guppies would be fine, but won't do it if I can't have the loaches in there.

Anyone know about brackish water tolerance for Pangios?

Hi and welcome to Loaches Online. :D

There may be instances of Pangio species tolerating salt - e.g. during treatment with it, but long-term, they should be kept in soft, acidic freshwater (many species are caught from blackwater areas).

Hope this helps,

Emma

It helps a great deal Emma, thanks! No brackish tank then - the loaches are more important to me than the other types of fish I might have kept.
