Loaches Online Forum

I want to purchase this book, The Borneo Suckers: Revision of the Torrent Loaches of Borneo.

Cannot seem to find it on Amazon books. The only place I can find it is overseas with a shipping cost of 40-50$

Is there any place in the US or Canada that sells it?

yes I tried that place but it has a 50$ Shipping an handling fee. That is almost the cost of the book. Am I being cheap here?? Or should it cost that much. 112$ US to get that book, 62$ for the book and 50$ for shipping. There must be another place to find this book.

Has anyone on here ordered it? Is is that good of a book?

I got my copy at the publishers bookshop in Kota Kinabalu last year.
It is a scientific based book written in "scientific language" that gives anatomical descriptions,anatomical measurements,fin-ray counts,scale counts,distribution and exact co-ordinates of specimens caught for study.
Some 4,000 fish were studied in compiling the book.There is a small section on biogeographic and ecological observations. I think it might not suite the average fishkeeper but would be treasured by anyone who keeps these fish as it is really the only book to cover them so completly.
It is a very good quality hardcover book with some good habitat and fish colour photo's,black and white specimen photo's and many descriptive illustrations - plus maps!! 245 pages.
If your interested in them I recommend you get this book but $50 postage is way too much.

Thanks Graeme for the description of the book. I was kind of wondering what it was really like. good to hear from a fish keepers point of view.

I think you must be running afoul of the prudish Canadian customs people...You know how they frown on fish porn books

I think I paid something like $20 US for shipping, but I got the book in just a few days.

Jim that is the same place that is going to charge me 50$ for shipping, plus whatever Canadian Customes is going to tax me on for bringing fish porn into the country.

Hi Andre, The only place we got our bums wet was snorkling at the Abdul Raman Marine Reserve and swimming in the pool at the Rasa Ria and Tanjung Aru Resorts. We also had a small shower as we were driving to Mt Kinabalu Park but otherwise 32c sunny days. I was there at the end of May with my 19 yo daughter Lauren for a week and we had a great time.
I hope to return soon with my wife and stay at Mt Kinabalu Park for a week and do guided walks in the park, I'll take my snorkling gear and u/w camera and try and find some Borneo Suckers.
When were you there and did you enjoy it ???

One of the places I usually look is www.abebooks.com which is a Victoria, BC, used bookstore online company (abe stands for advanced book exchange). I checked and there was only one available, also from the UK. Indications are that they only ship within the UK so no luck there either. Perhaps if you know someone over there they can purchase and then send it to you?

As a matter of fact my cousin just moved to Germany!!! Thanks bslindgren for pointing that out. I will try and send the book there.

Nah.. I was with an Aussie friend incidentally, exactly a year ago. We were supposed to climb Mt. Kinabalu but the rainy season was late. You may remember the news about major floods in Southern Borneo.

So in the end we spent most of the time at the resort having massages, playing pool but most of all eating like pigs.

We only managed to do some white water rafting and that was fun I must admit.

Otherwise it was rain, rain and rain again.

But I would like to try again in future, I'm often in Malaysia for business and I always add extra days to visit the country.
