Loach Recipe - salt & substitutions

I'm really wanting to try out the recipe that's provided on this website (and the book of course

), but I've got a problem in relation to the prawns. All the prawns that I've come across in the store show the ingredients as - Prawns (85%-98% depending on brand), water and salt. Now salt is the one I have the issue with, it's listed as an ingredient so I'm assuming it's added after capture? Given that there's a salt content is this going to be a problem for my fish? Even the fish counter prawns had a sodium content of 7%.
The next question is - does it have to cod, or are there acceptable alternatives? To find plain old cod seems to be quite a challenge, it seems most people like it battered or with some sort of sauce on it these days.
TIA

Try soaking the prawns in a big bowl of water in the refrigerator over night. That should draw a good portion of the salts out.

I buy frozen salad shrimp to feed my loaches.
All I do is soak it in tank water for an hour or so and then feed.
They key is to use tank water and not tap water.

I use whatever sort of fish is on special, including an odd shellfish mix that I find frozen. I avoid the beef, though. I'll use other protein sources.

Thanks for the replies, long-soaking in fresh water before use makes perfect sense, should've thought of that
@ Glostik, these are for use in the recipe not for feeding individually, I do always defrost frozen feeds in tank water though
Diana, great to hear that substitutions can be made, I should've read the online recipe before posting, I was running on memory

I'll follow the recipe in the book I think but substitute the cod. There's no call for the beef in the book recipe
Thanks for you help everyone

Haha. I visited the stone loach soup thread before coming here, and the title was suspiciously worded.
The best feed-meat is tank raised freshwater white fish (tilapia, trout, etc.).

great thread, ive been feeding my clowns some chopped prawns without soaking them, and it seems ok, although after feeding theres a thin layer of oily liquid that forms at the top of the water. no problems though, but ill be soaking them from here on.
since loaches feed on daphnia, larvae worms etc. do they also eat ants?

i feed my betta squished ants and mosquitoes hahaha, i wouldnt feed live as i'd be afraid of the ant biting the insides of the fish
hes still alive and kickin, so i guess its safe, just as long as there is no pesticide (such as raid) ANYWHERE in or around your house

I am just wondering - when you feed your Loach shrimp, cod etc - do you cook it? I assume just in case you cook the shrimp/cod first?
Thanks!

You don't need to cook them.

I don't see why they can't. By the way, I'm also from the Philippines, Jet.

Ants? Really? I've had a lot of success with queen/flying ants and ant eggs, but the regular little running kind always get spat out. Seems odd, as when you clean a trout for breakfast they're always full of ants and wasps.
