My usual Vietnamese supplier has this week decided to change the common name of the Sewellia lineolata on their list from 'River Loach' to 'Cute Hillstream Loach'. If that's not an attempt to coax shops into buying them, I don't know what is. The worrying thing is that most will not know how to care for them properly.

Well, I have to say, they are cute hillstream loaches.
It does seem an odd name, even for sales purposes.
Reticulated hillstream seems more appropriate.

"Cute"

Yes, they are undeniably so, but that's the daftest "trade" name ever.
"Reticulated" suits far better, I agree.

For Jim, they're more.....Sewellia doncarewhatheircalledjuswantheminmytankplease

I see them in your future.

 Martin.

Well Helen, Jim's is a Pseudogastromyzon cheni, these can be called just about anything by the trade, but figure Chinese being in the title somewhere. However "Chinese Butterfly Loaches" are usually Beaufortia kweichowensis, which is quite different.

Graeme has a Schistura mahnerti, sometimes called a Burmese-Border Sand Loach, and of course, Emma's is a Clown Loach....her "Marge" actually.

My mobile gif is several species overlayed, and I'm the one that produces these for other people. Quite easy if you can draw and have the necessary program.

Martin.
