Tank overheated....

Post by Ashleigh » Wed Aug 20, 2008 3:28 pm

My eheim 2329 wet/dry thermo has just managed to fry my tank to 40.9 degrees C within 2 days  its only set to 26!

Luckly the clown loach made it through so did the bristle nose plecs-they wern't even showing any signs of being unfomfortable but I can't say the same about my lovely rainbows, only 4 managed to make it

Completly gutted  Im amazed all the clowns are ok, thankful even but boy was that a surprise to come home to today

heater therms i hate them, if you complain to the people that make them they might send you a new one, BIG DEAL.
hope your other fish settle down after their shock Ashleigh.
i'm dreading the day it happens in one of my tanks as it's never happened yet.

Yea tell me about it, I have the thermo switched off and just using the two visitherms at either side now. Not having much luck at the moment, my fluval packed in the other day for the Pangio tank aswell
Send me a new thermo heater thingy, nah, Id just like the 80 quid that it retails for

I could kick myself, the clowns get a water change every day cause they get fed so much but I skipped yesterday as I was working late, I just came in, light was switched off and that was that... maybe if it was done then I would have seen the digi thermo showing the temp up so much :? Hopefully this is the 1st and last time, I never want to come home to a load of fish floating upside down ever again :(

Im just grateful that the loaches are ok- not much wrong with them, they are having their feast of squid as we speak, nothing wrong with thier stomachs anyway :)

That is amazing that they survived. (40C = 104F).

I have a temperature alarm on my main tanks. It has helped me on a few occasions.

l

I know I was shocked at the reading on the digital thermometer, the fact that the clowns were showing no physical signs of distress.

I have two smaller clowns looking a bit lethargic this morning and the slime coat looks a bit thickened on one but they are eating ok so Il be keeping an eye on them, theres not really anything I can give them for shock, they just have to try and get over it themselves.

I ordered a Digital alarm for £12 this morning, so hopefully it will do the job. I will also be contacting eheim-the filter is only a few years old and always been maintained correctly by myself.

The remaining rainbows are just 'hanging' there, usually they shoal around up and down the tank, I hope they will be ok :?

is there a decent heater out there?

Post by greenbaron » Mon Aug 25, 2008 12:09 pm

Ashleigh, how are the fish doing?
Heaters.......... grrrrrrrrr
I have just put a new one in my tank and it seems impossible to get it settled down to a particular setting. Leads me to ask, does anyone out there make a decent heater? I don't think in all my years of fishkeeping I've ever bought the same one twice. Thinking of trying yet another one right now, since I don't currently have a back-up in storage... The one with the external controller is starting to look really good to me :P

I picked up a couple Hydor 150 Watt heaters on clearance for $10 each this spring. First time I have purchased a new heater since all of the others were part of used setups people were selling or giving away. I'm very happy with them. They are shock resistant and they are keeping everything warm just fine. Obviously this says nothing about how long they will last, but so far so good.

You may wish to have a look at this little gizmo:

I've read some good things about it :)

Thanks for asking :) the fish are doing fine so far-the 2 clown loaches that were looking funny are constantly pale, Il assume it will just take a while for them to feel ok again.

For heating I use two 300 watt visitherm heaters (I was using these alongside my thermo) and just those two together have been keeping the tank at a very stable 26.7 degrees C (thanks to my new digital alarm toy :D ) I would certainly recomend them to anyone although they can be a little pricey for a heater.

I will look at all suggestions- I'm open to anything at this point! This one I just installed was a back-up I purchased some years ago, the first one that actually had a temperature setting on it (as opposed to an arbitrary index that indicated just higher or lower). I thought it would be so neat to just set the temp and stick it in there! Ha. Set to 81F, by that evening it was 82.5. Turned it down, kept coming on. Finally set it to 78F, then it held 80.5 for a few hours. Then started creeping down. So now it's set to 79, and I have 81.3. PITA...
It's not that I don't have enough wattage either. 250W in a 75gal, should be good to go.
Will keep tryin'
Glad your guys are hangin', probably due to their very good condition to start with...

 Thats such a pain, a few I used to have didn't kick in the heating element until the water temp had dropped a few degrees lower than the temp it was set to kick on at-it was most annoying. I can't complain about the visitherms-you can even get a little heat guard that pervents any of the fish from coming into contact with the heater whcih is great if you keep hillies or plecs that are bend into wanting to sit on the heater like mine are... but then again I thought Eheim were great :?

I think this lot are just a very hardy group-they stuck a move from Ireland to Wales spending 6-8hrs in transport and then another several hrs before their tank was setup, and then 3 house moves in the last two years. Not a death or breakout of disease/parasites related to any of the moves, not that its good to move them around, but they cope amazingly well :D Im lucky to have such chilled out fish
