How many clowns

how many clown loaches can I have in a 55 gal (48 gal volume) tank?

Bill,

Zero long term. The clowns will out grow the tank very quickly. I would suggest getting some smaller loaches for the tank if you can not house the Clowns in a tank roughly 2'x 2'x 6' or larger as they grow.

If you went up to 75gallon, I would say you could keep 5 for one year, but weekly water changes are a must.

Mine out grew a 4' long tank when they were about 3-4" long. As noted above this is a good size for young ones, but they grow fast at that size, and will be ready to move up at about a year old.

For 55 gallon tank, 4' long I would look into Kubotais, Zebras and others that grow to about 4" max.
38 tanks, 2 ponds over 4000 liters of water to keep clean and fresh.
