I just bought some baby Black Kuhlies, but I have a very old HOB filter that I don't think could handle fine sand, so pool filter sand seems best. I was wondering then, what size grains would be best for both the loaches and the filter? Are any of these good?

My loaches seem fine moving over the top of the gravel, but I know they could be happier. So far I haven't been able to find any filter sand at the hardware stores in my area.

I use 30 mesh sand. This is pretty close to 1mm sized grains.

Put a sponge over the filter intake. I use the Aquaclear sponges, or a slightly coarser one. Kuhlies (especially babies) can get into some filter inlets.

Rock yards, masonry stores, landscape centers may carry many different grades of sand. RMC Lonestar packages sand in many grades, including 30 mesh, coarser (labeled 'aquarium sand' and finer (too fine for this use) and several in between. Start maling local phone calls and see what is available.

Maybe even some local hardware stores may carry these sorts of products.

I only use 3M colorquartz sand exclusively now.
Black, S-grade, of course. Highly recommended if you could get some locally.

I like the 0 grade pool sand, a nice light tan color rather than a whiter slightly larger size. I can light vacuum into both with a smallish gravel vac or python.
