So, my dear husband's pusher called this afternoon, and she can get Apistogramma agassizi for him. The issue is, I was thinking that the 40 might make a really nice river tank, with Sewallias.

Anyone want to jump into a domestic dispute? :D


(and I must admit, this is a sign of how far we have fallen that we get regular phone calls from the hour-away fish store with updates on stuff we might be interested in. When we were there last week she had even put aside a HUGE piece of driftwood for us -- which we of course love!)

Actually, it was a pair of them, male and female.

At issue is our underutilized 40 gallon tank, which right now unfortunately has 3 lovely but aggressive odessa barbs in it. Those fish were a mistake (despite some research, we didn't realize how fin-nippy they would be). But there they are.

So I was thinking of adding to that tank with some lovely can-hold-up-to-a-barb fish, like the Apistogramma. Water parameters won't be perfect, but the Odessa's can cope. They seem to be stout and hardy.

And posting a query here. Maybe I should go ask on an Apistogramma forum and ask what people there think...

A dilemma like this has a very easy answer:

Get another tank!
38 tanks, 2 ponds over 4000 liters of water to keep clean and fresh.

If you want to breed the apistos AND raise fry, they'll need a 20g long with no other fish. I kept apistos with pangios etc, no eggs survived. If you've never bred cichlids it can be very interesting. If you have, apistos are similar to most other cichlids but the fry may be more saleable than larger or aggressive types.

I'm thinking of giving up my apisto cacatuoides pair. They're in with corys & eat each others eggs. I don't want any more tanks going but my husband loves them. Sewellia are on my "short list" for new loaches so I'm not going to be any help.... :twisted:

hey, I am "fostering" a tank right now (that is my justficaton for another tank. But really, a friend moved, had a nice tank that she needed to rehome, "stat", so I offered to help her until we have a better home (hahaha).
I have it stocked with tetras ( added to her cute little neons). It is a column tank, not at all my fave, but hey, it was free and a lovely little tank.
I will give it to someone eventually who is responsible enough to take the tank seriously as I already love those little tetras!!

Let's face it. In your situation, you could really use another tank, don't you think? I am wanting some apistos myself, and I think it would be a shame to put a pair where they could not have a chance at succesfully.

at least it's a good hobby for your husband, keeps him inside the house ;)

I agree with the crowd, get another tank (or replace this one with a larger one and install tank divider :D )

ooooh, I want the Saddled loach (Homaloptera orthogoniata?) too. And what is the pretty one with red on its dorsum?

PS, Martin - I'll be in Toronto next month. Any good fish stores? Or restaurants?
