Sub Tropical Loaches

Post by Rhab » Thu Aug 12, 2010 9:38 pm

Wanted: Small gang of affable snail eating loaches. Must be comfortable at 68F, lower is preferred. Must be prepared to share the tank. Fin nippers will be shown the door.

Max growth 6".

A preference for a sand bottom a plus.

I can't think of any loach which would quite fit the bill, thats fairly cold and fairly small in size.

If you ran at about 22C i'd recommend Macrobrachium lanchesteri as a snail destroyer. They don't get too large and don't get too aggressive like larger Macrobrachium species. But they do like it a bit warmer than your tank.

Three questions: What country are you in? What is the current stock in the tank? What sort of snails?

You'll be looking at these species. Not sure of their preferences on snails though.

The definite snail-eaters all require higher water temperatures. What are you intending to keep the loaches with?

Martin.
