how to set up for loaches?

Hi I don't know if anyone has posted this or not but if they did can u please tell me where I can find the post
Here is the problem. While I was deployed my wife got 4 clown loaches for snail control in a 29g tank when I got back I realise that it is not enough tank for them. Currently I have a 55g 36x24x18 tank that I will convert for them as a temporary home for them until mmy basement is done and I can get a 8'x24"x24" (kinda a custom tank idea I have in my head)
What I'm wanting to know is any idea for setting up a river tank in the 55g for now, like what kind of power heads will work that won't push out all the water, would any live plants be a good idea, would I use 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch pvc pie for the current manifold and what would be the best sponges to use for the filter side also would I neead a little air pupm to help oxyginate the water.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated since I really want to keep the loaches
P.S. I currently only have 4 and they are about 3 inches long
