This happened a few days ago and am wondering what all your opinions are for what caused this odd thing to occur.

1 early morning before going to school i saw that 1 of the 2 55 gallon fish tanks that i have, the water line was about 1/4 of the tank. I realized there was a giant crack in the glass that started from the bottom right to the very top left. It looks to me like a stress crack but i had nothing leaning against it or anything.

Quick Note: just to let you know i saved 13 out of 17 fish, one of which is the clownloach for my avatar. All of the fish i saved are doing well including the loach, he is 8 inches long. Do you think it could have been him seeing as how he is the largest fish in my tank? Personally, i don't think so but give me your feed back if you think it was possible that he did it.

thanks so much,
Ian

No... Wouldn't have been a fish. Horrible thought - a cracking tank. Ugh.

No, I doubt the clown would be the cause of a cracked tank.

Was the tank on a completely level surface, not even grainy wood?
I use styrofoam sheets under my tanks. (I get them in the insullation department of a hardware store)

I would have to ask several questions.......................

Diana's obvious one...is/was the tank level :?:

What type of stand...steel tube, cabinet stand or on regular furniture :?:

How long set up in place :?:

Type of flooring, i.e. rug, hardwood, vinyl :?:

Subflooring.....floorboards, particle board, concrete :?:

Colorado.....do you get seismic activity :?:

Martin.

Sounds like what happened to my 55g years ago.

Mine broke because the center brace came loose. Could that be the problem with yours?

Yes the tank was level
The stand was a wooden cabinet
It has been there for about 4 1/2 years
1/8 inch carpit
Yes, Particle board
Yes, we don't get alot of earthquakes EXCEPT this year. We have had 3 in our general area but they were very quick and no damage ever occured. I would not expect it to be that because my other fish tanks would have been damaged by that, However it may not be true. All my other fish tanks (3) did not recieve any damage from anything and are all in great condition.

thanks
