I put that blue LED Christmas lights unit over the Clown tank and I have it timed to give lighting ramp down and ramp up.

Decided to use some of the functions on my camera I virtually never use.
Shutter delay and long exposure. I set the camera up on a tripod and gave it a 10 second exposure in the darkened room. It came out too bright, so I've edited to represent approximately what it actually looks like. As you can see, it's not overly bright.



The fish seem to like the effect.

I am in the process of adding blue lighting to my new tank, one of the shops I was in the other day was selling off some 42" marine glo tubes that should have been £22 reduced to £5 .

I have put two starter units on the tank so that I can have white lights on during the day and then switch to blue on a night, if it works ok I will alter all my tanks to the two tube system.

The thing is, they're Christmas tree lights, so not overly bright, plus the tank is 24" deep. Works good though. I was watching all the Corys feeding last night, shuffling along in a big group. This morning, all the Clowns were out and about, rushing up and down the tank. I sat in the almost dark room having my morning cup of tea being entertained.

The fact that you can't see much in the picture is somewhat realistic. Try looking at the pic with the room lights off tonight. You'll probably see a lot more.

I'm betting the clowns will be very active under this lighting. Some of mine seem to almost wait for the main lights to go off (which are not very bright at all anyway) and as soon as they go off leaving just the blue moon, they are all out and about. The larger specimens, which tend to be a lot more shy, really look so relaxed and confident under dim blue lighting.

My 6 foot has an Allglass double 55W CF unit, plus a 2 x 3 foot tube light unit over it.
Well the CF unit crapped out and these days I hardly ever even switch on the other lights. The plants do ok with mainly just natural daylight. The Clowns are out most of the day, but used to hide when the lights were in use.

When I used to have tanks, I always kept some of those cheesy blue incandescent bulbs around for the night dwellers. It was cool to be able to see fish like raphael catfish swim about in the open.

Certainly 'says what it does on the tin'
