Hahah! Martin will be pleased that yet another loach fan has been assimilated!

If you do set-up a River Tank and would like fish that naturally occur in large groups, then you could go for Sewellia lineolata. Have a look at this old thread (you need to scroll down towards the bottom of the first page) to see some pics of them in their natural habitat - they can be seen congregating in large groups: http://forums.loaches.com/viewtopic.php?t=1480

With regards to the B. kubotai tank, you could add a shoal of small Asian dither fish, maybe from either the danio, barb, or rasbora families. Their presence might encourage your B. kubotai to venture out and about a bit more.
