dying N Corica

Post by mousey » Sun Nov 12, 2006 10:54 pm

About 2 -3 months ago I had an outbreak of hemorrhagic septicemia in my 20 gal tank after introducing a pair of gold gourami's. In total 6 of my 'old' fish died as well as the gourami's. i believe they also had internal parasites d/t seeing white poo.
I also lost 1 N corica just before this event. It wasted away.
treated tank with erythromycin and antiparasitic foods. everything settled down.
added a dwarf red gourami- he did well for a number of weeks and then one day I found him stuck to the filter intake tube. Separated him to his own tank where he rallied about and seemed as normal.
I thought perhaps he was intimidated by the huge SAE's in the tank and the danios and female betta who is very much in charge.
When he got better( eating again) he went into the platy/ guppy tank where he swam and ate for a couple of days. Then one morning i found him listing on his side and dead by lunch time.
Well the past few days I have one N Corica that is lying on it's side breathing hard and not eating. It seems to have some balance issues too.
I finally caught it and have it in a small container so i can moniter it.
I have looked at it with a magnifying glass and can see nothing. i have no idea what the poo looks like-- have never seen poo from any of my bottom feeders.
It is not interested in food at all.
The container i have it in is too small for it. My q tank is currently full of guppy and platy fry. I have too many filters and tanks running and all my supplies are used up.
A loach hobbyist on another forum tells me he lost a few loaches with the same symptoms( heavy breathing, no appatite, loss of balance) despite treating with maracin 1 & 2 and levamisole.
Does anyone have any idea what this little guy has? I have had it since february of this year-- got it when it was a little sliver of a thing-- it grew fat and active until now.
my ammonia and nitrites are 0, nitrates about 15 -20. tank is planted. water changes every 2 weeks- 25%. ph not measured in tank but is 8.5 in tap. hardness is 193.
mopani wood and drift wood in tank too.
I am concerned that whatever is in the tank is contagious . When i originally had the septicemia I did lots of water changes( have the water bill to prove it) as it seemed to be a quick disease.
these symptoms are different- no bleeding into tissues.
Or could it be the water is unsuitable for them as far as hardness and ph go and is causing system failures?
thanks for any help. i hope i have given you enough detail. let me know!

i tried extra oxygen too.
