Dojo Jumpers

Post by Kad » Sun Feb 05, 2006 5:06 pm

I purchased two dojos yesterday. They're lovely fish, but one has successfully jumped into the filter and after I got him out (and turned the output up to make some more current), he tried to jump in a few more times (in the very early morning).

What causes jumping? Just jitters from being in a new place? The fish looks very healthy- good colors, and he was eating.

It's what dojos do ;-)

FWIW, in my experience they do it less in bigger tanks, but they are absolutely notorious for it. Give them lots of tanks furniture to play with and a good lid to the tank and you'll probably reduce the risks a lot. Don't fall into the trap of assuming that if you can't see them, they've jumped, though - they are very good at hiding. Not a great combination for paranoid fishkeepers...

Make sure you have the tank extremely well covered. Put some kind of mesh over any holes it could possibly jump out of. I had one jump out of a tank that was fairly well covered, but obviously not covered enough.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
