Turn the heater off and wait for the temperature to go down.
My water temperature can be close to 90 without heating.

You could float a bag of ice cubes.

The important thing is not to bring the temperature back down too quickly, as the shock could kill the fish. Oxygen levels will become more depleted at higher temps, so make sure you increase aeration until the temp is back to normal. A good quick way of increasing oxygen levels is to lower the water level by an inch or two so that the water returning from your filter splashes down onto the water's surface.
Good luck,
Emma

emma, whenever i do waterchanges i keep the siphon hose 4-6" above the water..this makes ALOT of bubbles, and the fish love to play in the flow, even the gouramis!!!

Yes Brett, but in this instance we are talking about increasing the oxygen levels in the aquarium for a decent length of time, whilst Kris gets the temperature of her tank gradually back under control.

OK guys, thanks once again...I took some water out and left the lid open and the temp is dropping slowly. I am off to Petsmart to get another heater now before it drops too low. I swear, this has got to get easier, I have had so many issues lately.
Has anyone ever heard of this happening? It is a topfin brand. This could have been bad.
Thanks so much,
Krista

you should get a hagen 'tronic' heater..
they are fully electronic, they dont rely on a 'switch' to turn on and off...in most heaters, the common malfunction is when the switch sticks together..but with a fully electronic system, it cannot have a sticky switch..
believe me, they are worth the extra couple dollars..

Brett,
I am new to fish keeping and am finding it a little more difficult that I had planned. I guess I just thought you threw some fish in there and fed them and they would be fine, lol...this all started with my 6 year old wanting a tank and now I am a junkie.
Anyway, I will gladly invest in a hagen...can you get them at petsmart, or will I need to go to a specialty shop? Just curious...temp dropping fast and stuck at home for awhile longer, gonna have to hurry when I head out.
Thanks,
Kris

i KNOW that petcetera carries hagen, im pretty sure petsmart would too..its a huge brand...
infact, i went into a shop last weekend that didnt deal hagen..it was the oddest looking shop ever...haha..i guess im so used to seeing hagen..
IMO: hagen is the biggest, bestest aquarium supply company, petsmart should have some tronics in stock..
good luck,
brett.

I'm having a hard time picturing this...
how do you keep the siphon hose above the water and get water out of the tanks?
Sorry for being dense...

you're not the only one.
he was five. four? when we got him the fish.
he's now seven and has two tanks, one of which is four foot long. the three-year old has a three foot tank and my partner thinks we're all certifiable!

shari, when i put water back INTO the tank, not siphoning water out..
i actually put the bucket on some books, ontop of a chair, ontop of my desk..then siphon it in...
