Kuhlis and snails

I've got three kuhlis in a 20-gallon planted. I should say I think I have three. I haven't seen a sign of them for quite some time now. They must be under the driftwood, but I'm not keen on moving it to find out - I don't want to disturb them if they feel safe there.

They used to come out quite regularly at feeding time, but something has definitely changed their behaviour. The only hypothesis I have is this: For the past few weeks, when doing my regular gravel-vaccuuming I've been noticing more empty snail shells then before (I have a decent, but not problematic population of snails that infiltrated their way in with the plants). I'm wondering if the kuhlis have discovered that the smaller snails are tasty and therefore they don't need to come out for feeding anymore. I had always thought kuhlis weren't known for eating snails, but this certainly has me wondering. Anyone else have similar observations?

Are the kuhlis the only fish in this aquarium?

Sorry - no, they're not. There is one red flame gourami and 4 dwarf neon rainbows.

My khulis have set up shop in the wet/dry filter. Might only get a glimpse of them every fourth or fifth time I do a water change.

Mine go through phases, it seems, where they're more or less social. I'll see them regularly for several days, then nothing for two or three. I replaced the Foundered Ruins of Numenor with some black slate pieces last week and they've been very busy excavating underneath them, making little kuhli condos. But they've also been out quite a bit as well-perhaps they feel more confident because of their new home.

Never seen mine pay any attention to snails.
