Lots of Algae!! Please Help!!!!!

Post by Buzzy4p » Mon Feb 19, 2007 9:05 pm

Hi every 1,
I have currently 2 clown loaches in my tank. I have all live plants in this 29 G tank also. I have 9 plants in this tank. I run 2 flora Glow 20W light bulbs.I have noticed a lage amount of alge in this tank. I saw the other form on Brown Alge but i figured this is different since i have live plants. What should i do to Emimate all of this brown alge? :?: Also i have 1 more question. I have a temp. strip on my tank, and it says about 82F. Since it says 82 i image ins about 2 F off. So its about 82F and 84F. Is that ok for my clown loaches???
Thanks,
Buzzy4p

temperature

Hi Buzzy4p,

You might want to look at the info in this link if you haven't already seen it. It shows the temperature range for clowns to be 78ºF to 83ºF (25-30°C). http://www.loaches.com/species-index/cl ... cracanthus

There is another question in this forum where they talk about algea. You might find your answer in that discussion. Or there are a number of really informative plant sites. One of them is www.plantgeek.net. I've been able to find answers to many of my questions by looking back through previous questions and by searching for specific words. When I was trying to figure out what lights to put on one of my tanks I found them to be friendly & helpful. :D

you do know that clown loaches grow to be over a foot long right?
a 29 gallon is too small for 2 and all your plants. And any other fish you might have.

Manually clean out your algae and only leave your lights on for 8-9 hours. Your algae problem is because you leave the lights on too long.

And I think clowns like it cooler, in the high 70's.. Check out their profile on this site.

How long do you leave your lights on? Too much light will encourage algae growth. Brown algae will grow on plants.

How long has the tank been set up?

82-84 is ok for clowns. I use EboJager submersible heaters.

I leave my lights on for 10 hours. The tank just got fish a week and a half ago. The only fish in the tank are the baby clowns. The tan was set up on the 3rd of Feb. What should i do?

Buzzy, your tank is not cycled. Get some Ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte test kits asap. Clowns are very bad fish to cycle a tank with. Ammonia and nitrite spikes will likely make them sick or possibly die.

Test your water. If there is ANY ammonia do a water change. Add an airstone or lower the water level so the water splashes into the tank.

Read about the nitrogen cycle.
http://faq.thekrib.com/begin-cycling.html

Or take the clowns back and get some tougher fish until your tank is cycled. Do you have a friend with a mature fish tank? (older than 6 months?) If so, and if you're sure it is a healthy tank, maybe you could ask them to give you some gravel, or a piece of their filter media to add to yours.

Barring that, try to get some 'ammo loc' or some Prime water conditioner. It will help to detoxify the ammonia and nitrites.

The prob with the airstone is i have sand on the floor of my tank, so i cant put an air stone, the loaches seem very health and active in the tank
