Having read some topics on snails and various peoples opinions and projects on keeping/ breeding them....I was hoping for some advice. :)

Is it feasible to get 2 Apple snails in my tank and hope they produce young that the yoyo's can eat??

My other thought would be to wait until my 96litre tank is set up to use for my fish and use my old 40litre tank for the snails.

Any suggestions welcomed.

i prefer the second option. if you get snails breeding and your loaches dont like or cant be bothered to eat the baby snails, it could be hard work to get rid of them again. if you have a spare tank, it may be easier to control how many end up in the main tank. possibly.

Unless you want to 'view' the snails, you could use any large recepticle to breed them in. Some use those large tupper ware containers, or ice coolers (like the kind you keep sodas in at a picnic). Just buy a filter for it, put in some substrate from one of your other tanks, and make sure you have a male and a female.

http://www.applesnail.net has some good pictures assist determining which is what gender.

snails are hermaphodites.. They have both sex organs and they fertilize each other.. All you need are 2 snails... The loaches might eat the adult too. So there goes your baby snails. It's best to breed then in another tank.

opt for the separate tank idea

Yes, I think il get a couple of snails n put them in the small tank.

Do they need the same 'treatment' as the fish? By that I mean do i use filter n heater etc etc like with the fish? (hee hee it reminds me of times as a little girl collecting cockles from beaches. I remember carrying them back to the house in a bucket and leaving them in my bedroom. Coming back hours later to observe them and finding them all over the floor up the walls and on the bed!! :) )

Anyway, erm, my next query is type of snail? Iv only seen Apple snails in the shops near me. Would they 'do the job'?
