This morning I approached the tank with bucket in hand to do a water change, turned on the light to do the normal headcount, and found two yoyos dead. One of them was the skinny one that has never done well, and the other one was a mid-sized one that had been just fine yesterday. He had good shape, eating well, acting fine, a silly little guy and I have to admit, my favorite.
So I removed them and checked them out closely. The small one had the belly ripped out of him and eyes were cloudy. The mid-sized one had red at the base of a couple of his fins. One living fish has a scratch on him possibly from a fight?
Tested the water-
pH 6.0 (not sure when that dropped, I haven't tested in a while)
nitrate 40-80 (very difficult to tell because the colors are so close)
ammonia 0.5
The dead fish did not look decomposed so I'm not sure if the ammonia is definitely from that. Some dead plants may have done it? Some of them are suffering from the lower light. The high nitrate is probably because of the smaller water volume, even though I have been doing larger water changes, they have not been twice as large.
I went ahead and did a 35% change after testing, but didn't mess with the filter because of the ammonia.
I guess I should still treat with antibiotics? I've heard mixed experiences with maracyn I and II affecting the cycle or not. Also, I never did treat with levamisole. My pleco is still fine and I haven't seen any worms in a while. But I know thats stupid and they must still be there. I was just in the middle of so many other things. Bad excuse. After seeing they were getting sick the other day I decided to go ahead and fork out the money to treat them, but I waited a little too late. I still think while they are in the smaller water volume would be a good time to treat since it will cut the cost of the antibiotics in half. Still I will be spending almost $50 that I don't have if I do both that and levamisole, which I think I should.
What a mess. I feel very guilty. I'm almost posting just to confess. I don't feel I can claim innocence since they are still in this smaller tank. I've been doing water changes and feeding them a good diet but that's about it.
