Well, I lost one of my angelicus tonight during my water change. I guess it was hiding in the ornamental logs I have in there and I take all that out when I clean but I looked and didn't see it.

Well about an hour later I found it dead in the floor. I feel so horrible. I love those little boogers. Guess I learned my lesson, from now on I will syphon some of the water out first into a bucket and but all the stuff in there till I am done. They tend to hid out in there and wedge themselfs in the curved in corners.

Oh well, another lesson well learned.

Awe man I am so sorry to hear that. I lost my favorite betta the other day.. water level was just below the top of the internal filter, and she splash dived on top of it while I was at work and dried out

I don't know how bad I would feel if one of my dojos made it out of the gap between my aquarium edge and glass canopy. I keep the level of the water low just in case. I'll have to keep that in mind to check my ornmanents next time I move them from the tank since my lil guy likes to hide in one of the pirate barrels.

Glad to hear it Kris. They were a lifesaver for me too.

my gf accidentally killed a baby loach that way. didn't check the ornament. now when i move anything i always check every piece of ornament and when i take the net out of the tank i always look in the net.

I can see how easily that can happen. I've already lifted a cave out of the water and then noticed a loached crammed inside a small spot. Thanks for sharing, Kris. It's a reminder to us all to be on the lookout.

Sorry about that, this particular ornament is a favorite of my botia. It's a fake log and on the inside edges it is curved in leaving perfect places for them to wedge themselves in, which they normally do when I start to clean the tank.

Many times I have had a struggle getting them out of these little water filled hidouts and sometimes I just leave the logs in there are move them around, however last night I did a major vaccume and wanted to take them out, I just missed this guy and I don't really know how becuase I checked and checked AND then checked again. I guess he decided to come out on the way back in and flopped under the tank stand. It's tricky. From now on I am going to take a seperate bucket with tank water in it and put these 2 logs in there just to make sure.

I am not sure you should try to get loaches out of their hidey holes. They like them. And you do not have to clean your tank all that often, you just upset the fish.

OK, maybe I was vague on my post. I like to clean my gravel really well when I do my water changes and I can't do that with all the ornaments in there. Usually I leave them in there and work around them but once every couple of months I like to remove them and get the gravel really well. If the fish are upset by this I am sure it's better than a nasty bacterial infection.

I never force them out, I just dangle the log in and out of the water until they come out on their own, sometimes it just takes a while for them to do so. I agree with you 100%, you shold never try to force them from their happy places. If my post relayed that message it was not my intention and I would never encourage anyone to do so.
