OK, I've found a dealer in Phoenix who will sell me the 3M colorquartz sand, and they have it in black, which I really like. They sell it in 25 lb lots, though I'll probably have to have it shipped.

Question is: How much do I need for a 75 gallon (4' long) tank? I can either go 50 lbs or 100 lbs. The cost is $25. per 50 lb bag.

Currently I do not keep live plants, but that of course could change. I think I know the answer, but...........

What are the dimensions of the tank?
Measure the floor space in feet, and multiply by the depth you want, also expressed in feet.
Such as: a tank 4' long, a foot and a half wide, filled 3" deep =
4' long X 1.5' Wide X .25' Deep = 1.5 cubic feet. Ask the salesman if s/he has any idea how many pounds per cubic foot.

Small stone, gravel, sand usually run pretty close to 100 lbs per cubic foot.
If this is not a stone based item, I have no idea how to guess at its density.

1 50 lb bag of 3M ColorQuartz should fill a 75g 1" deep. So 2 bags = 2", etc.

S grade is 106#/cu ft (I assume your using S grade as T grade wouldnt be good with loaches). At least thats the specs on their website.
