This little chap (approx 2.5cm TL) has been with us at the shop for some months now. Appeared with the last shipment of Gastros. Any ides on ID? I might have to bring him home to my river tank:









And then there's this loach which appeared at the same time the Sinogastromyzon wui came in from a German wholesaler. It looks similar to Beaufortia kweichowensis but the overall pigmentation is a lot whiter and the markings seem different. This is not some white patchy illness by the way, these fish are healthy and have been with us some months. They reflect blue-white on the rear 1/3 of the body. I think there are several like this, but I took this some weeks back, so I don't know if many have been bought up or not:

I think that might be a Protomyzon whiteheadi, or something similar.

Looking at Tan's book, though, it could also be one of the Neogastromyzons like chini or brunei.

The second guy is cool too. In fact, I want it too.
My guess is some sort of beaufortia. Perhaps a local variation or even another species than kweichowensis.
I think I would be taking them both home if I were you.
I just love the cool contaminants that come in with hillstreams.

First one looks kind of Erromyzon sp. to me.

The second one reminds me of a picture of a fish that we had on the old website, but the spots were smaller on that fish. As I recall the picture was in a description of a Gastromyzon species and the colouring did not match the photograph. The description was light spots on a dark body, so the picture was clearly NOT the species being described. I've a weird feeling it was the description for G. ctenocephalus. I think I have the description somewhere as a pdf stored on a disc. If my memory serves me correctly the picture was from Dr. Keith Martin-Smith.

Martin; I know what pic you are talking about. It also appears in Tan's book and is identified as a new species, Gastromyzon spectabilis.

Wow, now those are cool fish! If only that shop was a littttttle bit closer, id set up residence in it....literally!

Lovely little chaps isn't he. I remember seeing this little chap at Emma's store. At first i was thinking Neogastromyzon sp of some sort.

They are both lovely looking fish Emma, I do remember seeing them last time and I think we settled on Neogastromyzon sp.

Interesting. I'll try for better pics of the first one - it's tricky because it's so ickle.

Is that the only one of that species you have?
I am always looking at gastro shipments in hopes of getting some borneo oddball. I only see the usual mix of ctenos, oscellatus and stellatus...not any zebrinus, or whatever you have either .
Of course there was a time when I never saw any gastros around here, so I guess it could be worse.
