Two of my Czech B. histrionica were having a hell of a fight over a sleeping hollow last night just before lights out. I managed to get these pics before the light timer clicked off.

They were very grayed out, plus very red around the mouth.

Note the nicks and scratches. They were really going at it.

Note how uncharacteristically deep-bodied this fish is.

Wow, those guys are pretty beat up! I didn't know histrionicas could be aggressive like that, but then I've only ever had one at a time of that species. I do know though that my big modestas were doing almost the same thing with a hiding place unterneath a log. One was getting so beat up with white nicks and white patches all over him that I finally sank the log in the sand so neither one could get under it. The beat up loach healed just fine.

Are these the guys that use to be orange? How large are they now?

The same fish Mike. They were only like that when very small. I think it was basically a case of semi transparency of the tissues with blood vessels giving the appearance of an orange tone. The color in the fins has reduced as well.
They're just over 2.5" SL at present.

Really? I thought they'd be bigger seeing how thick they are.
These are really slow growers.

Interesting. I never saw a "Histy" fit like that when keeping the species.
I like the nosey dario coming by to check out the scene.

So much for the Great Czech Mystery

They still look very nice, even if much of the cuteness has been lost..

Oh they're still pretty cute. Here's two of them in their normal coloration.

Plus they're all hand-tame which adds to the cuteness level. I can stroke them while they're eating.
