only two... what to do?

Post by MTS » Fri Jul 27, 2007 10:18 pm

I picked up a couple yoyo loaches, a bit of an impulse buy but I never see them locally and I got the last two. I'll keep them in a Q-tank for a couple weeks and plan to put them in a 50 gal with 4 young German Rams, a pair of apistos and a BN pleco. The substrate isn't sand but a gravel formulated for planted tanks. All the plants are low-tech, low light.

Don't know when I'll be able to add more loaches so I'm wondering if anyone has had experiences of keeping just two. I also note that "In nature, the fish live in calmer water pool areas of highland streams" so I'm hoping they don't need lots of current. There are many hiding places in the tank (but not the Q-tank) so if one of the loaches picks on the other one there are places to go.

As an alternative, I could put them in with the clowns and angels in the 100 gal. Do you think the company of clowns would be better for them?

I would definitely add them to the 100 and keep a look out for some more.

i'd put them in with the clowns too...i only have 2 yo-yo's right now for the same reason and they tend to pick on each other alot, but they play together alot too...they seem to enjoy the company of the clowns and chase them around... i think it gives the smaller yoyo a break from being picked on, and sometimes he darts behind a clown for shelter....they'd probably be best off in the clowns tank..

Get more! there is nothing better than seeing then dance around together, and they seem to develop bonds between each other. Grovel to fish shop owners

mine seem to like the current and i see them more often near the spray bar than in a sheltered corner, so i'd agree to put then in with the clowns. i know apistos need much lower levels of water movement than loaches as they inhabit shallow waters that can dry up every year to just small puddles - hence the short life span of a year or two compared to clowns who live to 40 odd years. i think rams aslo prefer calm waters.

i cannot visualise a 50g tank, as i have got used to litres, but would you do better to move the angels over to the calm water tank so as you have a calm tank for the cichlids and a current tank for the loaches?

Thanks all for your comments. I guess I'll put them in the 100 gal with the clowns and angels. I actually moved the angels from the 50 gal because they are getting large (tall) and the tank is short.

I will be on the look out to buy more. I would order them except the shipping and box charge isn't worth it unless the size of the order is large enough to be worthwhile. Also, I don't like mail order in months that are hot or cold.

In the meanwhile, the larger of the two yo-yos is already chasing the other one around. I'll try adding some plastic plants to the Q-tank.
