destocking a tank......... regrouping suggestions please....

Post by kimura » Sun Jul 29, 2007 12:40 am

my 75 gallon is well full and although it is over filtered, heavily planted and well maintenaced, i see a power outage being a big problem. i do have a battery backup but thats only gonna get me an hour or so. ANYWAYS....... there are about 18 1.5 inch sids, 10 2 inch striata and 12 kubatai from 1.5-3 inch and a few dithers. right now i'm fishless cycling my 40 gallon breeder size tank( 36" long 18" wide 14" tall). so should i put the sids by themselves ? i was thinking placing the striatas in the 40 since they tend to like slightly cooler waters and maybe making an indian biotype. i could put the kubs in the 40 gallon but they can get fairly large so i'd rather give them the big tank. i KNOW the tank is overstocked but my fish are healthy and i'm doing something about it so please dont flame or shame me.......i feel guilty already...... and thank you for any advice

i agree with shari...that's what i would do if it was me...don't feel too bad about the overstocking, at least you are doing something about it, and your fish are still happy so they'll be fine till your 40g is ready...

I agree with the others. It's the most logical solution and gives the sid shoal the room it's used to. I would like to see pictures of the 75 it sounds nice.

Martin.

i'm not too sure about dithers for the 40 gallon just yet but i am open to suggestions. i was thinking 6 glass catfish but i'm not sure if they are from india.

unfortunately the 75 gallon doesnt look as good as it did 6 months ago. i was worried about oxygen content in the water so i added 2 air stone below the filter output. after 3 months i noticed anubis leaves started breaking from the stems. the leaves look ok but the stems just started falling apart. lack of c02 is all i can think of. anubis has grown well in that tank for years and i have made many cuttings from just a few plants. i decided to remove 1 airstone and then i started using a plant fertilizer which i never really needed before. this slowed the leaf loss but it still hurts. the tank was loaded with anubis..... almost too many. the only good news about this is my java moss has been growing like crazy after the anubis took a dive.

you are worried about a power outage and only have 1 hour back up.
Is this with heat or just filtration?
depending on the time of year and temp you might want to only do filtration.
Lots of ways to keep your tank warm if the power goes out (even putting that cheapo foam board around the sides and back will really help and is something you can do before an outage and it saves you $$$$ from heat loss how is this for a run on sentence).
an airstone is good but if you have surface movement of the water (ie a powerhead creating a current) that will be better than a bubbler.
If the annubis isn't growing/dieing off don't add ferts.
Run a filter on your 75 gallon and then take it to your breeder...Boom instant established tank.
drain your pool!

well im mainly worried about oxygen content in water and killing off my bacteria. i have a canister filter and i know the baterica can die rather quickly in a canister. heating isnt a problem where i live, its just with a tank this heavily stocked there isnt a large margin for error. the last 2 years in the summer i've had a huge problem with power outages in my area. like 4-6 a summer lasting 1 -8 hours. fortunately they worked on the power lines here during the early spring and so far everything has been ok.....

I fixed your link...

At the bottom of the list that appears click 'Properties'

Paste that into your post
Highlight the whole url and click the 'Img" tag on the 'Message body' line of icons.
