Schistura territory question

Post by gulogulo » Fri Mar 17, 2006 11:20 pm

I have a 50g (48" x 12" footprint) set up for Schisturas. currently there are only 2 in it, one sexcauda and 1 similis. I recently got 6 more (probably at least 4 different species) and can get 6 to 8 more of similar size. The six new ones are in quarantine so I have many options. My question is how many does everyone here think will work in my tank. I am willing to set up other tanks if I already have too many.
Current tank filtration consists of a biowheel HOB (330gph) and a powerhead connected to a sponge filter. I am currently doing weekly water changes of 20 to 30%.
Current loach residents- 14 Pangio semicincta, 2 P. doriae, 4 P. myersi, 1 P. shelfordi, 5 P. anguilaris, 6 P. oblonga, 8 P. cuneovirgata 5 Chromobotia macracantha, 3 Gastromyzon ctenocephalus, 3 Gastromyzon species unknown

It really depends on which species it is. Some can live quite happily with no territory's. Most though, like to have around at least 6 inches of squared territory, in my experiences. And of course, lots of shelters would be good. Or if you keep a large group of same species like 10 plus, it seems that aggression is lowered in some case's.
