fish store stories + pictures

I got rather frustrated today with my favorite fish store. Last week I was in the store and noticed a very nice looking Sid in a 10 gallon display tank. I asked the freshwater guy if he’d consider selling, and he said no, but he was pretty sure they were on the order list and would be in on Tuesday (yesterday). That wasn’t the point exactly – I wanted the fish because I don’t like seeing a loach all alone in a 10 gallon, but yeah, I want some more Sids anyway, so I said sure, give me a call (then when I pick them up, we'll have a chat about how awesome they are, how social they are, and how that one lonely sid would be way better off living with me - hey, it could work, right?).

Well it turned into me just placing an official order for six sidthimunkis.

Tuesday went by with no phonecall, so I rang up the store today to check. Conversation went like this:

“Hi, I ordered some fish and never got a call… just checking if they came in, or if you couldn’t get them”
“what kind of fish?”
“it was a type of loach…”
“what’s it for? Snails?”
“um… just to have… I just wanted them…”
“oh, a clown loach?”
“no, it was a (gulp) Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki… sid… dwarf loach … chain loach… um… it’s very little…”

Upshot of it was, maybe next week. Whatever, I’m not in a hurry really, just annoyed. A few weeks ago in the same store, I was buying plants and had this conversation:

“what kind of fish do you keep in your tank, discus?”
“no, loaches”
“just loaches? loaches and what else?”
“um, well I’ve got a couple of SAEs and some otos in there”
* blank stare *

I’m a weirdo; I guess I just forget because this is the only fish community I frequent. Having said that (and just in case anyone from the store is lurking to learn how awesome loaches are), this really is my favorite store. They take care of their fish and they take care of their customers. And no dyed fish – that’s rare around here.

Also, while I’m complaining, here’s a little gem: I have a little planted shrimp tank in my office. One of my staff happened past the other day while I was testing the water and said “oh, cute, you’re playing with your little fish thing!” I think I’m going to have to fire her.

Finally, so this post isn't a total waste of space, here's a couple of pictures. The sids are finally starting to fatten:

Just forgive the silly employee. She plainly doesn't understand the joys of your passion.

Sounds like she doesn't enjoy the joys of her job, either.

Nice pics :D

Don't worry zmo63, your weirdness fits in here rather nicely :D

I liked the story even if it illustrates the frustrations of dealing with the living dead.

Martin.

Sometimes fish are ordered and the supplier subs them for something else for whatever reason. But it is still very annoying that the store didn't ring you like they said they would to let you know one way or the other. :?

Thanks everyone for the nice comments on the pictures.

Just to clarify, I'm not really upset at the store employees - they're great about everything else. they always check up to make sure people have suitable environments for the fish they want to buy, and even check your lighting before they sell you plants. They've steered me away from bad purchases more than once, and that says a lot about the store. Only thing I wish is that they would treat loaches as more than just snail control. They seem genuinely confused as to why I want them! I need some local loach buddies!

i went to collect some fish from Emma's once, and the man catching them for me, after seeming a little confused at first, then said "you are one of them loach people, arent you?"

i dont want to think what sane customers that go in to but a guppy think when we all invade. we may all be mad, but at least we have good taste
