More than one kind of 'clown' at my LFS

I recently went to my usual LFS to get some more food, and of course checked out the loach situation. They had some kuhlis and clowns. I almost got a few of the kuhlis, but decided not to, at which point one of the newer employees tried to help.
He suggested that I get a few clown loaches. I told him they would get waaay too big for me, at which point he tried to convince me that they would get no bigger than 3".
I told him I'd seen pictures of clowns over a foot(

), and he told me that it must have been a different kind of clown loach

.
I also read in a book that clowns only get to 6", and that you should keep several young ones but only one adult specimen in a tank at a time

.

You should see if you can find an email for the store and let them know this happened. Attach a picture of Marge or Basil - or just a link to this site.
One day this myth will cease to exist!

don;t you think, though, that the problem isn't that people who advise customers in this way don't know the true situation, but rather that they don't care?
Not so much of a myth and more of a convenient untruth.
sigh.

This is why we should have some kind of poster like the ones Emma showed, that could be downloaded as a PDF file from LOL and printed. At least once a year we could encourage a mass-hassle-your-lfs campaign and try to get these posted in shops.

then you get the
"oh yes, i know that clowns CAN get that big, but its so rare that they do, that you dont have to worry. i know your tank is no bigger than a vase, but at least it will eat the snails."
maybe we need a Marge roadshow

You aint heard nothing yet.
these are excerpts from a local fish hobbyist in the Philippines.
...clowns make excellent tankmates for arowanas and tiger datnioides because they...
...clowns are scavengers...
and after I had told them that loaches are river fish and need a pretty decent current running through their tank.
...wouldn't a strong flow stress the fish?
and they wonder why my fish colors so bright and theirs doesn't.
