Sure looks like a bichir. I have a plain one, and I adore her. She has a great personality. Just remember that your bichir will eat every fish that fits into its mouth. I lost a lot of fish until I figured out she was a fish eater. She was sold to me as a flake eater. Ha!

Oh believe me, I know that. They'll eat whatever they can fit in their mouth. lol. I would have to have a separate tank probably if I ever got one. I just adore this one in the photo. It's gorgeous.
What tank do you have yours in??

Mine lives in a 75 with a ropefish, a tiretrack eel, some plecos, a couple synodontus euruptus and two raphael catfish. I will need a bigger tank in the near future. The rope, the eel and the bichir are some of my favorite fish. If I had a bigger tank I would have several ropefish and bichirs. They do well with their own kind with big enough tanks. They are more fun.
I would like a planted tank for them, but the plecos eat everything that is plant like.
These fish are really nice together. They are fed bloodworms, cocktail shrimp, shrimp pellets, zucchini and algae wafers for the catfish.

I have never been so lucky to see an ornate bichir in real life. Lucky you! Sigh! I love my plain girl.

This is the one I saw today. Sorry the photos are blurry, I always feel weird taking pics of fish in the store. Lol.
I was pretty shocked myself to see it. I was like "WHOA?!"

She's not plain. She's got a lot of personality from what you've said and you love her. I can only hope that I become a good enough fish keeper to own one myself one day.

That is a very nice ornate and in decent condition at a store.
Mine has personality plus.

Her coloration is plain, but I love her dearly and she isn't a plain fish.
She was one of my first and biggest mistakes. I had her in a 5 gallon tank with danios -- she was the size of a kuhlie, but should never have been in a five gallon. I just didn't know. Danios disappeared. The store told me that it couldn't be the bichir eating my fish, since she was a "flake" eater.
She is the main reason I keep getting bigger tanks. And the reason I have a tank that is for tough, gentle big fish. The bichir, eel and ropefish will all eat fish, but none of them are aggressive and so I can't put them with aggressive fish. I had leoparinus, which are beautiful and very mean. The first fish I ever gave away.
