General issues with ammonia

Post by StarFire » Sat Mar 06, 2010 1:47 pm

I have another tank that is a 20 gallon. I was given both of these tanks as birthday presents. We are still having ammonia issues but it does not rise as fast as with the smaller tank. In the tank we have one female guppy, possibly preggers or she could just be fat she is a greedy fish. Five small cory cats (3 peppers 2 green). Around 13 baby guppies (just recived there color recently). I had a female who gave birth the night I got her and she died over a week later. None of the babies were eaten, to my surprise. I am not sure what i am going to do with them when they get bigger, but that is an issue for later. I know the tank has to much in it especially since it is not cycled. But I dont have the heart to kill any of the fish. I lost a couple of female guppies and one green cory. He had most of his fins torn off i assume from fighting or picking. I know all of this is from the ammonia. I am going to do some large water changes to get the ammonia down.

:?: If anyone has any other suggestions to help keep everyone alive I woudl gladly take it.

:?: Also what to do with all the baby guppies. I cant get another tank in the apartment.

Thanks so much for the help

Daily testing of ammonia and daily water changes to drop the ammonia.

As for the babies see if the LFS will take them in as surrenders??

I will have to try to find some non chain fish stores. Only thing close to me is Petsmart and Petco.

Have you tried ammo chips? The local pet store will have it, you put it in the filter with the carbon. Aeration and filtration - move that water.
