I happened to be given a little paddletail at work by my boss. It looked like he was snacked on by his other paddletail mates. After a bit of reading it turns out you cant keep these guys together either...

So.. i snuck the newt home and bob wasnt terribly upset.. >.> Hehe..

I just thought i would show you some of the regrowth, i just find it amazing.

a few days after I brought him home. Around june 26th



Then a few days later that white bit fell off....

around june 14th he seemed to be working on this...

I set up a new tank for him too.. Once we get moved in i want to make a 'river' style manafold thinger that Martin uses for him

7 days later! there are toes!! Hee.. <3


I will be keeping this updated for anyone else interested in the regrowth. Now only if us humans could do that...

My cute African Dwarf Frog Stubby, was missing an entire foot. It never grew back, but he did get one new long finger. He uses it for leverage.

I can definatly get a full body shot the next time I fish him out. He can be really squirmy but i'll get it.

I used to keep newts as did a friend of mine, as kids. They were the Eastern spotted newt which you don't see on the market anymore since its a native species. He had one that lost a limb and we got to watch it regenerate. I also had one that lost all its limbs to some hungry goldfish.
Unfortunately, as much as I tried to help the guy, he didn't survive.
I started keeping them again before I got into loaches and had the Japanese firebelly, the paddletail and the mandarin.

oohh gosh... all of its limbs? the poor thing. I would love to get hooked on newts compleatly but i have a few other things i am hooked on at the moment too Hehe.

Wow, very cool pics, I had no idea it could grow so fast. My only newt experience is netting them out of the swimming pool during late summer, red backed salamanders I think.

More photos. Not much bulk to the new arm but I dunno. Least he has it.
He gets earth worms everyday now, he's -always- hungry. I try to give him bloodworms and krill as well. I am going to work on adding more items to his diet.

How big to these guys grow?
I would love to keep some but we can't get them in Australia.

Says about 6-7 inches but I have no idea at what restrictions you might have from where you live I hear its hard to keep some animals/fish there.

Here is a caresheet on these guys They dont do so well in groups but there are lots and lots of newt/salamader that might make a better pet.

Thanks they grow larger than I expected... Yeah we have very strict import laws here that prohibit us from getting many foreign species.
Many catfish, Loach and predatory species are prohibited as well as ANY non-native reptile or amphibian species.... But you can get most things if you know where to look
